How to Renew Your Florida Car Registration in 2026 (Fast, Online, or In Person)

Florida registrations expire on the owner''s birthday — not on the anniversary of your purchase. That single detail is why thousands of drivers in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties get pulled over every year with an expired tag they forgot about.

This guide walks you through the whole renewal, in plain English.

When does my Florida registration expire?

  • Private cars and light trucks: midnight on the first registered owner''s birthday.
  • Company-owned vehicles: June 30.
  • Trucks over 5,000 lbs, trailers, and some commercial plates: December 31.

You can renew up to three months early, and Florida gives you a short grace period only on the day of expiration — not after. Driving on an expired tag is a moving violation, and after six months it can be charged as a criminal offense under Florida Statute 320.07.

What you need to renew

  1. Your license plate number or the VIN.
  2. Proof of Florida insurance (PIP + PD minimums) that matches the registered owner.
  3. A valid photo ID.
  4. Payment for the registration fee (plus the initial registration fee if this is a brand-new plate).

If your insurance lapsed even for a day, the state may have suspended your registration. That has to be cleared before a renewal will process — we handle those reinstatements daily.

How much does it cost?

Florida charges by vehicle weight class, not by value:

Weight class State renewal (1 year)
Under 2,500 lbs ~$46.15
2,500–3,499 lbs ~$60.15
3,500 lbs and up ~$74.15
Motorcycles ~$30.15

Add county surcharges and the plate type (specialty and university plates carry extra fees). Two-year renewals are available and are usually the smarter move — you lock in one processing fee instead of two. See our live renewal pricing and fee calculator for your exact total.

Three ways to renew

1. Online with us (fastest)

Enter your plate, upload proof of insurance, pay, and we file it electronically. Your sticker ships to you and the state record updates immediately. Start at Renew your tag online.

2. In person at our office

Walk in with your paperwork and leave with the decal in hand the same visit. We''re minutes from the Florida Mall — see our locations or book an appointment so there''s no wait.

3. At the county tax collector

Free to do yourself, but expect an appointment-only calendar in most Central Florida counties. Check the official FLHSMV renewal page if you go that route.

Common reasons a renewal gets rejected

  • Insurance mismatch. The name on the policy must match the registered owner exactly.
  • Unpaid toll or citation holds. These block renewal until cleared.
  • Sanctions from a prior lapse. Requires a reinstatement fee, not just a renewal.
  • Address changes. Florida requires your address on file to be current within 30 days of a move.

Renewing a vehicle you just bought

A renewal is not a transfer. If the title is still in the seller''s name, you need a Florida title transfer first — the registration follows the title. If you already own another Florida-plated car, you may be able to save money with a plate transfer instead of buying a new plate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew without insurance? No. Florida verifies coverage electronically before issuing a decal.

Can someone else renew for me? Yes, with your plate information and payment. No power of attorney is needed for a simple renewal.

What if I''m out of state or deployed? We can process the renewal and mail the decal to any U.S. address. Military members stationed outside Florida keep their Florida registration eligibility.

Do I need a new plate every so often? Yes — Florida replaces metal plates every 10 years.

Do it once, do it right

If you''d rather not think about deadlines again, renew for two years and let us track the next cycle for you. Start your renewal online, or message our team with your plate number and we''ll tell you exactly what you owe before you pay anything.
