The 30-day rule

Florida gives a buyer 30 days from the date of sale to transfer the title. After that, the state adds a late penalty of $20 and the paperwork gets harder. Sellers, meanwhile, should file a Notice of Sale immediately so tickets, tolls and liability stop pointing at them.

What the seller must do

1. Sign the title in the exact spot for "Transfer of Title by Seller" — printed name, signature, date, and the selling price.
2. Record the odometer reading. Federal law requires it; a blank or wrong reading is the #1 reason a transfer is rejected.
3. Remove the license plate. In Florida the plate belongs to the person, not the car. Keep it for your next vehicle or surrender it.
4. File the Notice of Sale with FLHSMV (form HSMV 82050 or the online notice).
