Lost Your Florida Car Title? How to Get a Duplicate (Fast)

You found a buyer, agreed on a price — and then realized the title is gone. It happens constantly. The good news: Florida keeps most titles electronically, and a duplicate is one of the simplest transactions we do.

First, check if you even have a paper title

Since 2013 Florida issues most titles as electronic titles (ELT) held in the state''s system. If you never received a paper certificate, you may not need a "duplicate" at all — you just need the title printed on demand. We can look it up by VIN in minutes.

If a lienholder holds the title electronically, the lien must be satisfied and released before anything prints.

How to get a duplicate Florida title

1. Complete form HSMV 82101, "Application for Duplicate or Lost in Transit / Reassignment for a Motor Vehicle Title Certificate."
2. Show valid photo ID matching the registered owner. Multiple owners on the title? All must sign, or the non-signing owner needs to provide a notarized power of attorney.
3. Pay the fee. $75.25 for the duplicate, plus $10 for same-day fast title printing.
4. File it. Electronic filings post quickly; mail-in applications through the state take 2–4 weeks.

Special situations

Title lost in the mail. Choose the "lost in transit" option on the 82101 — it''s the same fee but flags the original as void.

Owner is deceased. You''ll need the death certificate plus, depending on probate, an heir affidavit. Bring what you have and we''ll tell you which path applies.

Lien still showing but paid off. Get a signed lien satisfaction letter from the lender on their letterhead. Without it, the state will not release the title.

Seller vanished, title never signed. This may require a bonded title or a court order. It''s slower, but it is solvable.

Can I sell the car while waiting?
